The Raga Fellowship Foundation, and a concert in memory of a teacher

The Raga Fellowship Foundation

For young students of Hindustani music

The Raga Fellowship Foundation exists to support young students of Hindustani classical music.

The music has always passed from teacher to student over years, not terms. That arrangement asks a great deal of the student: time, instruments, lessons, travel, and the patience of a family. The Foundation’s aim is modest and specific: to help some of those students continue when circumstance would otherwise make them stop.

It was founded by Arnab Chakrabarty, whose own music was formed through decades of traditional apprenticeship.

A contribution of any size to the Foundation’s general work. Write to us and we will explain how gifts are received and applied.

The Dr. Kalyan Mukherjea Memorial Concert

An annual concert in Calcutta, founded by Arnab Chakrabarty and dedicated to showcasing leading practitioners of Hindustani music.

Kalyan Mukherjea was one of Arnab’s teachers, and among the figures of the Bengal branch of the Shahjahanpur Gharana who drew heavily on khayal vocal music, bringing rapid, alternate-picked taans across complex string shifts while keeping absolute command of an inherited body of compositions. The concert keeps his name where it belongs: in front of an audience listening seriously.
